Event Date: Thu, 12/15/2022

While on a visit to UCI hosted by AirUCI faculty Celia Faiola, Drs. Molteni and Pieber, both postdoctoral fellows with the Swiss National Science Foundation, will present a joint research seminar entitled "Stress-modulated volatile organic compound emissions by coniferous and broadleaf trees."  This event will take place on December 15th, 2022 at 10 am in Nat Sci I Rm 1114.  For the abstract and short bios of the speakers, please see the December 5 message sent to the AirUCI e-mail list at 11:45 am.

From December 12th through 15th, 2022, AirUCI's partner organization APEP will present 'Hydrogen: Fueling the Sustainable Future - ICEPAG'.  Now in its 22nd year as one of the world's leading conferences on clean energy, ICEPAG is presented annually by the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) held in a hybrid in-person / virtual format for 2022. APEP addresses the development and deployment of efficient, environmentally sensitive, sustainable power generation and energy conversion worldwide, with several AirUCI faculty as founders and directors of the component centers and labs. ...

On December 7, AirUCI Prof. Annmarie Carlton will give a presentation to the UCI School of Earth System Science entitled "Agricultural Air Pollution Policy and Impacts: an Almanac."  The U.S. EPA considers agriculture the largest controllable source of ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4).  Livestock is a dominant contributor to these emissions that degrade air quality, threaten the stratospheric ozone layer, and contribute to the climate crisis. AirUCI will host a visit from Dr. Thomas Golin of the University of Helsinki December 5-6, 2022 when he will be meeting with AirUCI faculty and researchers to discuss potential collaborative research projects.  On Monday, December 5th at 2 pm he will give a talk about some of his recent research.  The talk is entitled "Atmospheric oxidation of imines and fragmentation of protonated peroxides: Investigation of reaction kinetics with computational chemistry" and will be held in Rowland Hall 390.

On Saturday, December 3rd, AirUCI will host a group of more than 80 elementary school students as they tour our labs and hear presentations about our research.  These students are from Santa Ana schools associated with our partner organization, the Madison Park Neighborhood Association. Organized by Project Scientist Lisa Wingen, and with the tours led by AirUCI researchers Dr. Kristen Johnson, Michelia Dam, Lucia Liu, and Lena Gerritz (grad students), the young visitors will see the Blake, Finlayson-Pitts, Nizkorodov, Saltzman, Shiraiwa, and Smith labs.

AirUCI grad students are among those organizing the 2022-2023 meetings of a group sponsored by ESS called CLEAN.  This is a non-profit outreach organization that works with the local community to educate middle school students in climate change and environmental issues.  The group will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 27 at 4 pm in Croul Hall room 3101... all are invited!

AirUCI faculty Steve Davis will be among the speakers at the Celebrate Physical Sciences alumni event to be held Saturday, September 24th from 9 am to 1 pm at the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building (ISEB).  Steve will discuss The Future of Energy and the EnvironmentLog in to RSVP

Event Date: Wed, 09/14/2022 to Thu, 06/15/2023

Beginning in September, AirUCI researchers are volunteering to assist with science events for the Irvine Unified School District in the 2022-2023 school year.  For example, AirUCI grad students Cindy Yanez (Czimczik group) and Jackson Ryan (Carlton group) have already signed up to assist with several events, which include:

  • "Ask a Scientist" night on September 14th
  • Science Fair Project Mentoring, held September through December
  • 21st Century Career Conference on December 13th
  • 41st annual IUSD Science Fair

Event Date: Tue, 09/06/2022

The Madison Park Neighborhood Association will hold a CUAL Committee General Meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:00 pm in the Madison Library.  MPNA is our non-profit partner organization working with us on the ":Beyond the Tailpipe" project.  This meeting will feature a presentation from AirUCI faculty Andrea de Vizcaya Ruiz on the health risks associated with poor air quality.

Event Date: Tue, 08/16/2022

AirUCI will host a visit from Dr. Robert Seidel of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin from August 15 - 16, 2022 when he will be meeting with our faculty and discussing collaborative endeavors.  At 2 pm on August 16th, Dr. Seidel will give a presentation in Rowland Hall room 390.  His talk is entitled "Interfacial Photoelectron- and Absorption Spectroscopy Studies of Earth-Abundant Catalyst Materials for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction".
